Why Do You Have Trains?

Have you seen Trains 🚂 at Preschool?

Trains are a wonderful learning toy for children between the ages of 2 and 5. Some children may not be very interested in them, while others can spend a long time building tracks and sending trains around again and again.

When children build train tracks, they are developing problem-solving skills. The pieces need to fit together in a way that makes the track connect all the way around. Sometimes it works the first time. Sometimes it doesn’t. Children adjust the pieces and try again, much like solving a puzzle.

Train play also helps children build fine motor strength. As they pinch, grasp, turn, and connect the track pieces, the small muscles in their hands grow stronger. These same muscles will later help with holding a pencil, using scissors, and other school skills.

Trains also support social learning. Children learn to share the track space, take turns with the trains, and sometimes work together to build longer tracks.

Train play also encourages imagination. A simple track can become a busy railway, a long trip across the country, or a delivery train bringing goods to town.

Children also develop gross motor skills when playing with trains. Often the tracks spread out across the floor, which means children need to move their bodies carefully around them. They may crawl, stretch, kneel, or reach across the track as they guide their train along the path. As they move, they learn how to be aware of their bodies so they don’t knock the track apart or block another child who is playing. This kind of movement helps children practice balance, coordination, and body control while they play.

So when you see your child playing with trains, remember — it’s not just play.
They’re learning. 🚂
